Title: Yarning the way : the role of Indigenous education paraprofessionals in guiding the post-school transitions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. Author(s): Burns, Karinda | Cameron, Liz | Clifton, Shirley | Fischetti, John | Gruppetta, Maree | Heath, Treesa | Ober, Robyn | Southgate, Erica | Thunig, Amy | Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education | Deakin University | University of Newcastle Published: Newcastle NSW : University of Newcastle : June 2018 Abstract: An essential element of career education is developing the knowledge and practical skills required to find out about the wide variety of available careers and the post-school education options that provide a pathway to these jobs. This research examined the cultural and learning support in this area provided by a group of educators that the researchers have called Indigenous education paraprofessionals (hereafter IEPs). IEPs are school-based educators and include roles such as: Aboriginal Education Officer; Learning Support Officer; Norta Norta Tutor; Koorie Engagement Support Officer; Aboriginal Support Tutor; Aboriginal Mentor; and Special Education Support Assistant. The 'Yarning the way' project looked at their 'connecting' and 'translational' role, particularly as it related to guiding Indigenous students towards post-school education options. The research focus was the role of IEPs in working with Indigenous young people, their families and communities towards access to and participation in post-school education, particularly higher education. The research involved face-to-face individual yarning and yarning circles, conducted in New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Victoria. There were 35 IEP participants (23 Female, 12 Male) with 28 employed in high schools and seven in primary schools. This report focuses on two main areas: (1) enabling post-school educational futures for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth; and (2) the role of Indigenous education paraprofessionals in enabling positive futures. Author(s): McMahon, Mary (ed) | Watson, Mark (ed) | Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University | University of Queensland Published: The Netherlands : Sense Publishers : 2015 ISBN: 9789463000321 (pbk) <b>DOI : </b> 10.1007/978-94-6300-034-5<br />Abstract: Career Assessment: Qualitative Approaches will assume a seminal place in the field of career development as the first book to focus solely on qualitative approaches to career assessment. This book represents a timely and important contribution to career development as it seeks to meet the needs of increasingly diverse client groups. Part 1, Foundations strongly positions qualitative career assessment in its historical, philosophical, theoretical and research contexts. The book is innovative by considering qualitative career assessment through the lens of learning. Part 2, Instruments, presents the first collation of chapters on a comprehensive range of qualitative career assessment instruments and processes written to a standard format to enable readers to compare, contrast and evaluate approaches. Part 3, Using quantitative career assessment qualitatively, mitigates against depicting an unnecessary divide in the field between quantitative and qualitative career assessment by considering their complementarities. Part 4, Diverse Contexts, considers qualitative approaches to career assessment in contexts other than able western, middle class settings. Part 5, Future Directions, reflects on the chapters and poses suggestions for the future. With high profile authors from nine different countries, the book represents a truly international contribution to the field of career development. In its focus on qualitative career assessment, this book holds a unique position as the only such text and will therefore assume an important place in the libraries of researchers, academics, and career practitioners. Title: International higher education student satisfaction with opportunities for work experience and employment in Australia. Author(s): Lawson, Christopher | Australian Education International (AEI) Published: Canberra : Dept of Education : April 2014 Abstract: As one of the most popular destinations for students internationally, Australia aims to ensure the living and learning experiences of overseas students in Australia are world class. The Australian Government regularly surveys international students studying in Australia to measure how we are doing and identify where we can improve. The 2012 International Student Survey, the most recent survey, collected responses from more than 37,000 international students at Australian universities about their experiences, including work, which is the focus of this report. This report shows that the opportunity to work during and after study is important to overseas students. Around three quarters of respondents to a 2012 survey stated that the ability to work during and after study was a significant influencing factor in choosing Australia as a study destination. More than 60 percent of student respondents to this survey confirmed that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the opportunity to earn money while studying. A similar number of students were also satisfied or very satisfied with opportunities available to take part in work experience or work placements as part of their course either paid or unpaid. More than 40 per cent of students stated that they were working. Twelve per cent were working in a job relevant to their future career plans, 6 per cent were in a program or placement as part their course of study, and 25 per cent were in a job not directly relevant to their future career plans. Eighty-five per cent of students who were working were in paid employment, while 10 percent were unpaid (including volunteering and mentorship opportunities). The ability to undertake paid employment within Australia's strong economy means that many students are able to offset some of their costs of studying and living through part-time employment as well as gaining valuable work experience. While the majority of students in the survey reported an expectation that their university would help them find work, only 18 per cent of respondents used the careers advisory services available to them. Almost a third did not know how to access these services, but thought that they would have found them useful. Where students did make use of the university's careers advisory service, satisfaction was high at 85 per cent, indicating that where universities are able to promote their services successfully international students do gain benefit from these services. This report provides Australian universities with information about how different types of international students prefer to receive information about careers advisory services. Overall, two thirds of respondents preferred to learn about careers advisory services by email, with a further one in five preferring to learn about this through their institution's website. The increasing significance of social media as a method of communicating important information should also be considered. Title: Career guidance and public policy : bridging the gap. Series: (OECD Education iLibrary)(SourceOECDÂ Education & skills) Author(s): Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Published: Paris : Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development : 2004 ISBN: 9264105646 Abstract: OECD countries are attaching rising importance to lifelong learning and active employment policies as tools of economic growth and social equity. Effective information and guidance systems are essential to support the implementation of these policies, and all citizens need to develop the skills to self-manage their careers. Yet there are large gaps between these policy goals and the capacity of national career guidance systems. Access to services is limited, particularly for adults. Too often services fail to develop people's career management skills, but focus upon immediate decisions. Training and qualification systems for those who provide services are often inadequate or inappropriate. Based upon a review conducted in 14 OECD countries (including Australia), the publication explores how the gap between career guidance services and public policy might be narrowed. It advocates improved national co-ordination arrangements and greater attention to research and data collection to inform policy makers. It also promotes the development of improved and more specialised training programmes for practitioners and the creation of more specialised career guidance organisations for the delivery of services. The study was conducted in Western Australia and South Australia with 1472 students surveyed from government and nongovernment schools. The findings are presented in terms of the subject and career choices made by students and the context of their choices, including the reasons for choices, sources of information and advice, and students' aims and aspirations. Four general issues are examined: the structural and perceived limitations on students' choices; the extent of control students have over their choice processes; the relationship between subject and career choices; and, the effects of gender, socioeconomic status and ethnicity on subject and career choices. The report identifies three areas of need for NESB immigrant students: English language; subject and career related information; and, careers education and counselling services. The proposed NTF represents the outcomes of preliminary negotiations with education systems, higher education institutions (HEIs) and other relevant parties throughout Australia on the feasibility of general guidelines for the education and training careers coordinators. These general guidelines refer in particular to course structure and a competency based approach to course content. Title: Modelling perceptions of business degrees. Series: (Working paper series n.20) Author(s): Walker, M. | Winzar, H. | Johnson, L. | Published: Brisbane : Queensland University of Technology. Key Centre in Strategic Management : Oct 1991 ISBN: 0949477605 ISSN: 1035-4042 Abstract: Using a marketing research technique known as conjoint analysis ( Green and Srinivasan 1978), this study examines the relative importance of different attributes of a business degree. The study focused on four managerially important attributes of business degree program choice among three distinct groups, namely year 12 high school students interested in a business degree, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) first year business students and careers advisers in the Brisbane area. The study found that the flexibility attributes were quite important, especially the time of decision as to primary major. All three groups surveyed find this attribute even more important in terms of attractiveness than the university. The share of market attractiveness was simulated for the high school student sample, covering the University of Queensland, Griffith University and the QUT business degree in its present format and for various alternative combinations of QUT degree. The results of this simulation suggested that QUT can considerably improve its share of attractiveness if it increases the flexibility of the business degree structure and by widely disseminating this among high school students. In fact QUT did capitalise on these findings by increasing the flexibility of its business degree program. Call Number : P 378.943 WAL Record No: 36429 from Cunningham Library Catalogue

Title: Recruitment of engineering and computer science graduates ... in good times and in bad : participation of engineering and computer science students in the Careers and Appointments Service's 1989 and 1991 employer interview programmes. Author(s): Phillips, J. | Published: Sydney : University of Sydney. Careers and Appointments Service : Dec 1991 ISBN: 0867585773 Abstract: Engineering and computer science graduates are sought by a wide range of employers for their specialist and mathematical skills and because they have coped successfully with some of the university's most rigorous and academically demanding courses. To meet this demand, the Careers and Appointments Service has in recent years organised programs of interviews specifically for final year students in engineering and in computer science. Surveys of students taking part in these programs were carried out in 1988, 1989 and 1991. The results from the first survey are published elsewhere. The results from the 1989 and 1991 surveys are given to provide a comparison between a fairly buoyant recruitment year in 1989 and a more difficult one in 1991. The effect of the recession on recruitment activities in 1991 is marked and is of considerable concern in view of the current government's hopes for an engineering and science-led recovery of the economy. Dept of Education : 1985 ISBN: 0644039264 Abstract: The report is derived from case studies of careers guidance and counselling in five States and the ACT. The major conclusion reached by the researchers is that careers guidance and counselling in education is not an activity that is readily or uniquely identifiable either by personnel or by practices. They believe that much needs to be done in providing suitable personnel material resources for appropriate training of careers education personnel. They support that a policy for training personnel should be based on an urgent investigation of training needs. The researchers also review nomenclature, materials, interventions and research needs.
