Title: Access and barriers to online education for people with disabilities. Author(s): Kent, Mike | National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education (NCSEHE) Published: [s.l.] : National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education : May 2016 Abstract: This paper reports on a study conducted in 2014 and 2015 that explored the accessibility of eLearning for higher education students with disabilities studying fully online in Australia. The study looked at students studying through Open Universities Australia (OUA). OUA brings together 15 different independent higher education institutions to teach students fully online across a number of different fields. This diversity of institutions allowed a number of different eLearning environments, technologies and learning and teaching strategies to be canvassed. The study had two phases. Firstly, a survey that explored students’ experience related to the accessibility of online learning and teaching platforms, and students’ approach to disclosure of their disability and the effectiveness of any accommodation offered by the different institutions. The survey had 356 responses. The second phase of the research consisted of a series of 143 interviews that expanded on the information collected in the surveys and also explored the accessibility of different approaches to learning and teaching and assessment. Students with: mental illness, medical impairment, mobility impairment, hearing impairment, learning disability, vision impairment, acquired brain impairment (ABI) and intellectual disability responded to the survey and each of these eight categories is individually addressed in this report. Title: A review of the research to identify the most effective models of practice in early intervention for children with Autism spectrum disorders. Author(s): Roberts, Jacqueline M. A. | Prior, Margot | Trembath, David | Australia. Dept of Health and Ageing Published: [Canberra] : Dept. of Health and Ageing : 20062006 ISBN: 1741861942 (Print) ISBN: 174186559X (Online)
Abstract: This report presents the results and recommendations arising from a review of early intervention services for children with autism. It concludes that effective programs, whether they be biologically based, behavioural, developmental or therapy based, all tend to: provide an autism specific curriculum content focusing on attention, compliance, imitation, language, and social skills; address children's need for highly supportive teaching environments; include specific strategies to promote generalisation of new skills; address children's need for predictability and routine; adopt a functional communication approach in addressing challenging behaviours; support children in their transition from the preschool classroom; ensure that family members are supported and engaged in a collaborative partnership with professionals involved in the delivery of treatments. A consistent finding in research studies is that different children with autism respond in different ways to any given treatment or intervention program. Therefore, it is important to note that there is no single program that will suit all children with autism and their families. There is however evidence to suggest that there are substantial short and long term benefits from early, intensive, family-based treatment programs, whatever their theoretical basis, so long as these are appropriately adapted to the child's pattern of strengths and weaknesses and take account of family circumstances. Title: Selecting and utilising assistive technologies in an e-learning context. Author(s): Downie, A. | Australian Flexible Learning Framework | Australia. Dept of Education, Science and Training (DEST) Published: Canberra : Dept of Education Science and Training : 2006 ISBN: 1921045744 Abstract: This report builds on the 2005 Adaptive and assistive technologies in e-learning report. The various technologies will be explained and their relevance to educational settings generally and to e-learning specifically will be discussed. E-learning and online learning are now integral components of educational delivery. Mobile learning is also gaining acceptance as such technologies as mobile phones, computing, photography and networking converge. In this climate, it is crucial that people who have disabilities are able to participate actively. Whether learning takes place in a conventional classroom, via a multimedia presentation or over the internet, some fundamental issues remain. The learner must be able to perceive information and instructions and, where necessary, keep notes of relevant points. It is also important that the learner’s knowledge can be assessed. The equipment discussed in this report has the potential to allow those criteria to be met. For that to happen, however, it is vital that students, teachers and administrators are aware of its availability and appreciate its significance. Equipment applicable to four major disability types will be summarised: vision impairment and blindness; hearing impairment and deafness; physical disability; and neurological disability. F. | Published: Odessa, Fla. : Psychological Assessment Resources (PAR) : 2003 Abstract: The Children's Color Trails Test (CCTT) was developed to meet the increasing need for a children's instrument to assess sustained attention, sequencing, and other executive functions while reducing reliance on language and diminishing the effects of cultural bias and parental verbal report. The CCTT retains many similarities to the original children's version of the Trail Making Test (TMT), but substitutes the use of colour for the use of letters from the English alphabet, thereby increasing the suitability of the test within cross-cultural contexts and with other special needs populations. Title: The neurologically impaired child : Doman-Delacato Techniques reappraised. Author(s): Cummins, R. A. | Published: North Ryde NSW : Croom Helm : 1988 Abstract: For about the last twenty five years a form of therapy known as the Doman Delacato Techniques has been applied to children with disabilities. The therapy originated from the work of Glenn Doman and Carl Delacato who established the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential in Philadelphia. The Institutes claim to be able to treat a wide range of disabilities. Their best known technique is called Patterning which is prescribed for children who have no capacity for voluntary movement. Yet many professional bodies and associations have denounced the approach as overly expensive, ineffective, creating false hopes, being destructive to family life and based on false theoretical assumptions. This book is the first to offer a detailed analysis and critique of the Doman Delacato approach. The author draws on data from evolution, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology to challenge its theoretical assumptions. He shows that there is no sound scientific basis to the techniques. Any improvements in a child's condition can be attributed to the increased energy and attention given to that child, rather than the content of the program. At the same time parents become emotionally ransomed and deluded by false expectations. Written in a style that will be accessible to nonspecialists, the book is an important work for both parents and professionals concerned with the welfare of neurologically handicapped children.
