The Successful Schooling Toolkit

The Successful Schooling Toolkit is the first of its kind to be launched in Australia. Funded by the philanthropic sector it provides practical tools to help schools and teachers to support students from disadvantaged and non-English speaking backgrounds to engage and learn. The development of the toolkit constitutes a unique response to the need to address the growing gap in educational outcomes between the rich and the poor in Australia. The toolkit has been developed as a navigable PDF file and is being distributed for free. Download

Boardroom to classroom: The role of the corporate and philanthropic sectors in school education (May 2009): This informative research report by the Foundation for Young Australians was commissioned by the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD). Several issues were the focus of the research, conducted during 2008 to 2009. One of these was to investigate trends in corporate and philanthropic involvement in government school education in Victoria. Download

A Rising Tide : exploring the future of giving in Western Australia

This report is by Sally Edwards and Emeritus Professor Margaret Seares AO (2010) and funded by Lottery West. The report is based on a study they undertook in WA to investigate how to encourage more, and more effective, giving in Western Australia. The study has underpinned the new Perth-based philanthropy umbrella group, Giving West. Download

Writing for successful grant seeking

Let’s say you have found a potential funding source through the Tender Bridge website:
• After that first rush of excitement, now what should you do?
• How do you crystallise what your ‘big idea’ is?
• What happens (as is the case for many philanthropic fund sources) if you need to partner with another organisation(s) to put in a proposal? Before you even start writing, you will need to provide a compelling case for your idea to these potential partners and/or supporters.
These are just some of the issues we all face when we seek and attempt to secure funding. The good news is that: Like any skill, proposal writing can be learned. If you speak, you can write a good proposal. And the more often you do it, the better your proposals will be.(Haydon, R. 2007, ‘The Shredder Test’, p. 12)

Philanthropic funding eligibility requirements:

A key decision for school leaders seeking additional funds is to work out whether their school is even eligible to go for a grant. Each philanthropic funding source has a range of eligibility requirements, often relating to the legal tax status of the applicant organisation. This is a two page tool for schools developed by Catherine Brown of Catherine Brown & Associates Pty Ltd. Download
